Steber Melody
The Memory Of Love’s Refrain
And now the purple dust of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that we’re apart
You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the Steber of yesterday
The music of the years gone by.
Sometimes I wonder why I spend
Each lonely night
Dreaming of a song
That melody haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
Ah, but that was long ago
Now my consolation
Is in the Steber of a song
Beside a garden wall
When stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale tells its fairy tale
Of paradise where roses grew
Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
My Steber melody
The memory of love’s refrain.
Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
My Steber melody
The memory of love’s refrain.

She is truly one my favorites. She and Eileen Farrell were such great personalities. Straight-forward, erratic, devil-may-care. They ruled their lives, rather than their careers running them. They were able to have other places to roost — and still have wonderful careers, not even mentioning their phenomenal voices. Nope there’s not many like ‘em these days.
Thks for this lovely song. I heard Steber in London, in recital, on THREE consecutive Saturdays, at the Wigmore Hall (must have been in the late sixties or early seventies, I can’t remember). She did an amazing repertoire, from Purcell to Barber, her sound floating like crystal on a sea of velvet. God bless her. Many thks. Terry, Brussels, Belgium.
